Richard had an extremely difficult time keeping a job. As a matter of fact, due to his laziness and lack of incentive, he was without a job far more often than he was employed with a job. And when he did get a job, he had an extremely difficult time getting to work on time, he often received poor performance reviews, and he called off sick so often that he almost always got fired just a few weeks after he started working.

Not unexpectedly, one of the effects of Richard's appalling employment history was the fact that he was just about flat broke almost everyday. Despite Richard's less than acceptable work history and financial misconduct, conversely, somehow he managed to drink in a hazardous and excessive manner almost everyday.

So it came as no big shock when Richard got a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was shameful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to spend six months in jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the disruptive results of excessive and abusive drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol therapy. The judge highlighted the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol rehab and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will most likely be spending quite a bit of his time in the county jail.

Richard said that he understood what the judge was proclaiming but he still claimed that jail was not the appropriate ruling. The judge saw things from an entirely different orientation and asserted that it was his responsibility to keep alcohol abusers off the streets who drive and drink and who get arrested for a DUI. To substantiate this perspective, the magistrate listed some revered, extensively researched alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics that underscored some of the negative consequences that are linked to excessive and abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Although Richard grasped the fact that he drank irresponsibly, he never thought that he was an alcohol dependent person. So it was a real bombshell when Richard started to experience chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawals about five-and-a-half hours after getting placed behind bars.

To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a safe manner, Richard was life flighted to a rehab hospital for alcohol detox and then brought back to the county jail. While locked up in the city jail Richard got alcohol treatment but because he received this therapy as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his hazardous and abusive drinking.

When his time behind bars was over, the judge announced to Richard that he would be under strict observation and would be mandated to take random alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking situation and how he unwillingly followed the therapy procedures while in jail, the judge knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never use common sense and learn how to live in an adult manner.
