A Young Man Needs Treatment For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Drug And Alcohol Dependency
Roughly three months ago I had lunch with a forty-one-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences extreme depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As declared by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship issues.
As stated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship problems and by both of his medical issues that he in essence has little or no drive to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete one semester of graduate school in Spanish history.
Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drug abuse and drinking problems and do something constructive about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he a person who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction counseling that leads to lasting recovery.
It may be asked how therapy would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are quite a few recently discovered physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is entirely nothing constructive about chemical dependency and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy situations is the path to financial difficulties, deteriorating health, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, a premature death, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his relationship difficulties and his depression might help him cope with these mental health issues more successfully and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the determination to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he urgently needs some hope for a healthier life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he requires for his intense depression and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and stick with his treatment program.
Benjamin is simply too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehab and get the treatment he needs for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.
Stronger relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to seek the medical rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about life.
