An Impetuous High School Student Exhibits Several Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a fifteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting several alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist, before he would be permitted to come back to class.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school situation to his parents. His parents were "relatively old fashioned" and explained to Stephen that getting kicked out of school was not a tolerable educational plan of action. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his ankles that could quite possibly harm his educational attainment for the rest of his life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mom and Dad were extremely saddened that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his buddies in the second.

It was clear that his Mom and Dad were 100% in agreement with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his discussion with his Mother and Father, Stephen at last agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning.

When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she without pause looked at all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he comprehended why his recent alcohol-related activities signaled such alarm.

Quite truthfully, Stephen wondered why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? In view of the fact that virtually all of his buddies drink about as much as he does, essentially, drinking is no big thing. Stated another way, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a major concern?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to function as an accountable young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink beer, wine coolers, wine, or hard liquor does not mean that it is the appropriate behavior for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was very well equipped for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that listed various drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied principally to teens.

After Miss Pender stated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was apparent that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real eye opener for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to articulate the short term and the long term results of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to support what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that related to everyone, and particularly to adolescents.

Certainly, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen at once comprehended why he should not be engaging in excessive and abusive drinking with or without his buddies anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
