Many alcohol dependency professionals claim that beer, wine, and liquor ads produced by the media are an essential reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other chemical dependency professionals affirm that the increase in teenage alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other alcohol abuse consultants claim that quite a few of our teens get involved in excessive drinking because of the increased tension that they undergo.

From a somewhat different standpoint, due to the fact that both parents in more than a few families work, the lack of parental guidance clearly has to play a significant part in the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse. In such a society, when life gets stressful, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more rewarding manner, contrary to others who fail to put their coping skills into action.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if adolescents not only received exclusive coping skills training but also obtained an exclusive education that underscored the short term and long term negative consequences associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is pronounced, would help teens keep away from the clear allure of teenage drinking and, accordingly, would significantly decrease the abusive drinking behavior undertaken by teens in our country.

There are indubitably quite a few valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a destructive manner. Such a complex subject demands a thorough and more meaningful response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our youth can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and responsible manner rather than resorting to unhealthy drinking to solve their difficulties.
