Tiny Breed Puppy Training
Exactly why dog lovers have this preconceived view that small breed pups are more problematic to discipline than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to comprehend. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should not be problematic.
Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy of any other bigger sized breed. Although training any canine will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, almost all other elements remain the same, and the technique to training the dog should remain the same, regardless its size.
However, I will allow myself to be corrected here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may create difficulties in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.
If a smallish breed dog is aggressive and poses a training problem, or if a smallish breed dog cannot be toilet trained or poses difficulties in being crate trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this situation. Let us investigate how and why.
Aggression.
Smaller dogs are preferred because they are sweet, they are like toy characters. Owners take pleasure in having their pet sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the problem starts. The inherent aggressive nature of the animal, is to take ownership over its space, its food, even its leader; all canines strive to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the canine animal that induces it to get on to the lap of its pack leader, specially when there are plenty of individuals gathered in the room.
This is a outright act of ruthlessness. Instead of admonishing the puppy, every owner with the exception of no one, would pet the puppy, even though it jumped on to their lap uninvited, developing the aggressive streak in the puppy. In this way the owner has accepted the puppy's inherent need to be the alpha dog.
Growling and snapping at a much bigger dog is another obvious act of hostility. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is viewed as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is larger. Most owners praise the puppy instead of scolding it, when it exhibits this aggression to a larger dog.
The above are but instances as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and positively not because small dog training is problematic.
Toilet Training
Owners tend to lug their small pets around no matter where they are, even while they are at home and that makes it very difficult to bathroom train them
It is, as if by second nature that the owners of small breed dogs to tote the animal to the spot where the pup should eliminate itself and then carry it back into the house.
It is this routine of carrying the pup to its appointed toilet area that is the start of all problems. In addition, since the pup is normally carried around so often it has no way of it informing or alerting the owner that it has to poop.
Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be transported to their potty area on a leash. If owners stop carrying their tiny breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most interesting part of dog training, and so it can be, even in Small Dog Training.
